The Long History of Hunting Dogs
The domestication of hunting dogs was a long process and began 20,000 years ago when man depended on hunting and gathering for survival.
Around 9,000 years ago dogs were used for livestock control, protecting flocks from predators and finding strays.
Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome were the first cultures to intentionally breed dogs into hunting roles.
Dogs were trained to hunt predators for both protection and sport.
In these cultures, hunting with dogs was an elite sport, but finally, during the Middle Ages, hunting dogs became used widely. At this point, breeds such as Sight Hounds, Retrievers, Pointers, and Scent Hounds came into existence.
