Five Tips For Choosing The Perfect Pet Turtle Name

Choosing A Turtle Name

  1. Get to know your turtle before you name it – study their personality, mannerisms, patterns, colors and breed to ensure you know them well enough to find a suitable name.
  2. Consider the kind of name you’re looking for– do you want a comedic name (such as a pun), a name associated with turtles and their habitats, or a unique name?
  3. Practise saying turtle names out loud – this will help you figure out if it suits your new pet.
  4. Take inspiration from the natural world around you – often the best names for pet turtles can be found in nature, particularly anywhere associated with water.
  5. If you’re lacking ideas, ask friends and family – getting others to help you out is always a great idea, and can provide you with great names that you’d never even considered!

Good Turtle Names

Good Turtle Names

Good turtle names are often puns, using words associated with turtles to create puns on the names of famous people and famous catchphrases.

Puns make great names for turtles, and it’s fun to laugh every time you tell someone the name of your pet!

It is also fun to think up turtle puns and to shellelbrate how great a turtle name they make.

Ironic names, such as ‘The Flash’ and ‘Jet’, are also hilarious, as they contradict the slow-moving nature of turtles!

Whilst some turtles are energetic and would suit a funny name, others are more dignified, and are more suited to fancier names, such as ‘Tallulah’ and ‘Thaddaeus’.

Pet Turtle Names

Turtle Being Held

Naming your pet turtle may sound like a daunting task, but it can be made easier by studying and researching your pet to know everything you possibly can about them!

Firstly study their appearance – are they small or large for a turtle?

If they are big, a name like ‘Godzilla’ would work perfectly to emphasize their size!

Have you got a Southern Painted Turtle? What colors can you spot on their shell?

If you can spot yellow or orange colors, names like ‘Lemon’ and ‘Amber’ would be great matches!

Then study their mannerisms.

If they move really slowly, a name like ‘Tank’ would suit their gait!

Sea Turtle Scientific Names

Sea Turtle

There are seven species of sea turtle living in oceans all over the world, from the Eastern Pacific to the Indian Ocean.

These are beautiful creatures and are often much larger than the species of a pet turtle.

Sadly, all seven species are classed as vulnerable or endangered, therefore it is vital that these magnificent animals are protected to avoid the extinction of their species.

Each species has a common name and a scientific name:

  1. Caretta Caretta (Loggerhead Turtle) – Loggerheads are the only species of sea turtle not to be listed as endangered, despite populations declining in countries such as Honduras, Israel and Cuba.
  2. Chelonia Mydas (Green Turtle) – Green turtles can be found in large numbers on the east coast of Florida and at Tortuguero in Costa Rica.
  3. Dermochelys Coriacea (Leatherback Turtle) –  Leatherback turtles are undoubtedly most renowned for their large size, deep diving and ability to travel far and wide.
  4. Eretmochelys Imbricata (Hawksbill Turtle) – Hawksbills are solitary turtles and are rarely found in large numbers, however, they have been sighted in Yemen, northeastern Australia, the Red Sea, and Oman.
  5. Lepidochelys Kempii (Kemp’s Ridley Turtle) – Kemp’s Ridleys are the most endangered species of sea turtle, most commonly found nesting in arribadas (mass synchronized nestings) in Mexico.
  6. Lepidochelys Olivacea (Olive Ridley Turtle) – Olive Ridleys are an endangered species of sea turtle, with their nesting population declining by 80% since 1967.
  7. Natator Depressa (Flatback Turtle) – Flatbacks are an Australian species of sea turtle, commonly found near coral reefs and grassy shallows.
