Base Spell – Green Flame Blade

The caster must wield a weapon and make a melee attack against a creature within 5 feet, or the spell fails. The target creature, upon being hit, takes the weapon’s normal effect. You can choose a 2nd creature that green fire leaps out to attack, provided it is visible and within 5 feet of the 1st creature. The damage done to the 2nd creature is equal to your character’s SAM.

Popular Opinions of Green Flame Blade

Green Flame Blade is popular but generally considered less useful than Booming Blade. This is attributed to the secondary attack damage which is not brilliant, even at higher levels, and that Booming Blade gives the enemy a good reason not to move.

It can be a useful multi-target attack in the right situation – handy for characters that usually attack a single target. However, it is not very diverse and is best suited to circumstances with large numbers of weaker opponents.

Anyone can cast it but sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards won’t burn a feat to use it.

The overarching reasons to use this spell are that it potentially hits multiple targets…and is pretty cool!
